They have placed the wooden chairs
and tables with care, various shapes,
sizes, remind me of countries on a map,
some well defined, others worn
by life's decay
People meet here through every season,
for some it's heaven, others it's part
of the plan. One man claims a voice
told him to make his way, another
says how could he be anywhere else
I sit re-shaping a napkin, have come
from nowhere special, have nowhere to go,
this is my home, from here I watch
silver birches flirt in the midday sun,
count stones like little miracles
Each one holds your breath, the gift
of time you gave, the wall, the well,
the walkway where two lovers meet-
I will offer them my table, I move easily,
no weight of chains or feathers dripping light.
